Woman, daughter win temporary reprieve from Canadian deportation on grounds of domestic violence

The ‘laissez-faire’ attitude by Guyana’s police officers with respect to complaints of domestic violence were among some of the issues which won a woman and her daughter further time in Canada after the judge also pointed out that a 2008 report found that the legislation against domestic abuse in Guyana was frequently not enforced, and that police officers could be bribed to make cases of domestic violence “go away.”

Walker walks off with second win

William Walker walked away with his second win from in two weeks when he secured victory in last Saturday’s Demerara Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Medal Play golf tournament at the Lusignan Golf Course.

Omission

We regret that the last two lines of the ‘Ian on Sunday’ column on page 7, and the final paragraph of our editorial on page 6 were omitted in yesterday’s print edition.

So It Go: Keep the gaff going

Last week, in a column entitled ‘Knowing the Fine Fine,’ I made the point that to know any society, including this one, you had to remain imbedded in it for a long time, and that therefore when resident Guyanese tell expatriate Guyanese that they “don’t understand Guyana,” the comment is accurate.
