Chainsaw operator gets four years for cultivating ganja

A 45-year-old chainsaw operator was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment after being found guilty by the court of cultivating cannabis.

Dereck Persaud of Kuru Kuru College, Soesdyke-Linden Highway begged for mercy before the sentence was handed down by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

“Please have mercy on me,” Persaud pleaded when asked by the magistrate if he wished to say anything before sentence was passed. The magistrate had earlier explained to him that the court beyond doubt had found him guilty as charged.

The sentence was subsequently handed down and Persaud was further told that he would be fined $30,000.

The charge against the defendant is that on March 7, 2007 at the Soesdyke-Linden Highway he cultivated cannabis.
Persaud had always denied the charge against him and yesterday marked the end of a lengthy trial.
