Man chopped off another’s wrist over past grievance – court told

A man was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of unlawful assault.

It is alleged that on March 5 in Georgetown, Glenrick Blair unlawfully and maliciously wounded Jaipaul Surujpaul with intent to maim, disfigure, or cause him grievous bodily harm. Immediately after the charge was read to him the defendant pleaded guilty.

However, acting Chief Magis-trate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, before whom the matter was called, promptly informed him that the charge was indictable and so he was not required to plead.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Venetta Pindar informed the court that the accused and the virtual complainant (VC) are known to each other, and on the day in question the two had an altercation over a past grievance. This reportedly resulted in the defendant, who was armed with a cutlass, chopping off the VC’s right wrist. The VC was also chopped in the head and on the left ring finger. According to Pindar, the VC is still hospitalized and his status is unknown.

Blair was then remanded to prison until March 17, and the prosecution was ordered by the magistrate to find out the VC’s current condition.

Meanwhile, when this newspaper visited Surujpaul at the hospital yesterday, he said doctors were waiting 24 hours before making a decision on whether to remove his right wrist. The hand was being held together by mere flesh relatives of Surujpaul told this newspaper.

Surujpaul expressed the hope for justice noting that on the morning of the incident he was going to visit the supervisor at the Gafoors Huston Complex when he was attacked.

Surujpaul was riding his cycle when he was attacked. The man said he was rushed to the hospital by a passing police patrol and the officers apprehended his attacker as well.
