Suspects in Timehri wedding house murder sent on bail

The suspects in the beating to death of Mc Lean Benjamin at a Timehri ‘wedding house’ have been released on station bail as police continue investigations into the murder.

Senior police officials told Stabroek News yesterday that they have not been able to gather any concrete evidence against the eight persons who were arrested in connection with the matter. Six persons were arrested on the day of the discovery and two others subsequently.

According to the officials, much information has not been gathered from those who were arrested.

Investigators believe that Benjamin, a 55-year-old logger, was badly beaten after he was accused of stealing liquor by some of the persons now in custody.

Reports are that a woman picking up bottles in a yard next door to the ‘wedding house’ around 07:30 hrs on Monday stumbled upon Benjamin, who was lying face down. Two pieces of wood, believed to be the murder weapons, were left on top his body.

Police from the nearby Timehri Police Station were immediately informed.

Residents did not recall hearing any strange sounds during Sunday night into Monday morning, since the music from the ‘wedding house’ was very loud. One resident recalled seeing Benjamin when she left the location late Sunday night.
