Mason sold cocaine to cop

A mason arraigned on three narcotics charges, including allegedly selling cocaine to a constable, was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Leon Garraway is that on May 14 at 79 Dowding Street, Kitty, Georgetown  he sold to Constable 19548 Richards one gramme of cocaine. On the same day, Garraway is alleged to have had 2.5 grammes of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. And on May 14 at the said Dowding Street location, the defendant is accused of having in his possession one gramme of cannabis.

The defendant, 32, of 59 Norton Street, Lodge denied the charges when they were read to him.

Attorney Vic Puran who represented the accused in his address to the court began telling the magistrate that “the facts in this case are particularly onerous.” It was at this point that the presiding magistrate cautioned the lawyer that she was not conducting the trial.

Magistrate Octive-Hamilton, however, informed counsel that she would entertain a bail application instead if he so wished.

Puran in his application for reasonable bail for his client requested that the alleged items mentioned in the charge be sent for fingerprinting analysis. The attorney said that his client has no antecedents, poses no risk of flight and has a fixed address.

The prosecution objected to the bail application made by the lawyer. Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that the defence failed to show the existence of special circumstances which must be advanced for the particular charges.

The court granted the prosecution’s request and Garraway was remanded to prison. His matter will be called again tomorrow.
