GWI says addressing water quality problems at Ituni

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) says it has started a project in Ituni, Region Ten to correct the “water quality challenges” and it expects the situation to be rectified by mid-year.

According to GWI Hinterland Manager Akram Hussein, the company drilled a well in Ituni last year as part of the first phase of rectifying all the issues experienced with sourcing water from a creek within the community. “Arrangements are in place to interconnect the well with the network by the middle of 2012,” he said in a statement released by GWI.

Hussein also anticipates completing the project by the deadline as “we are presently installing relay structures to make the interconnectivity with the network possible.” Further, he said that provision has been made for the installation of two mini-treatment units in Ituni, under the Hinterland Programme for 2012.

The Hinterland Manager also said that every effort is being made to expedite the project in order to alleviate the problems residents are experiencing. The company urges the residents to be patient as the technical components require meticulous installation to avoid delays.

In addition, a GWI team, including members of the Scientific Services Department, is currently investigating the concerns voiced by residents about the use of a nearby creek as a source of water.
