Edghill eliminated at group stage

Caribbean Under-15 silver medallist Chelsea Edghill has failed to advance to the last 16 of the Latin America junior championship in Mexico after placing third in her group.

Edgill, competing in Group Five along with Spain’s Andrea Galeano, Mexico’s Maria Espinosa  and Brazil’s Tathiane Pimentel found herself caught in a three-way tie at the end of the group stages and in the tie break found herself in third position and eliminated from the competition. It was a bitter blow for Edghill who had placed herself in with a chance to advance after winning her two earlier matches. But her defeat to the number one seed Pimentel of Brazil opened the door for Espinosa. Edghill lost 0-3 to Pimentel after defeating Galeano 3-0 and beating Espinosa 3-1.

However, Espinosa upset Pimentel 3-0  to force a three way tie which saw Edghill being ousted.

Pimentel ended with a 5/3 win loss ratio for first place while Espinosa ended second with 4/5. Edghill was ¾.

Going into today’s game against Pimentel Edghill was almost assured of a place in the last 16 before Espinosa scored the upset of the day by beating Pimentel.
