J/ca men, women win at Chess Olympiad

Jamaica enjoyed their best day at the 40th World Chess Olympiad yesterday in Istanbul, Turkey, as both the men and women’s teams won easily in the 10th round.

For the second day in a row, the Jamaican women registered a 4-0 victory after blanking Angola.

Deborah Richard-Porter easily out maneuvered Sonia Rosalina for her third win in nine games while national champion Krishna Gray broke her four game losing streak with a hard fought win over Irineia Gabriel.

Melisha Smith then dismantled Fina Carlos’ Horwitz Defense in 34 moves, and Ariel Barrett expertly used the Lipnitzky Variation of the Sicilian Defense to overcome Caxito Esperanca.

In the Open section, Jamaica beat Liechtenstein 3-1. Warren Elliott  made short work of Fabian Ferster by refuting his Marshall Gambit in only 23 moves while International Master Jomo Pitterson won for the third time in eight games as he patiently out played Mario Kobler.

Joint national champion Andrew Mellace stayed on course for his Candidate Master title when he stunned Kur Muendle with a relentless King-side attack while Damion Davy, the other joint national champion, lost his second game in a row as his King fell captive to the two marauding Knights of Marcel Mannhart.

In other 10th round Women section results: Trinidad and Tobago lost to South Korea while Barbados were beaten by Yemen.
