O’Selmo wins Troy Humphrey Memorial feature race

National cyclist, Rastaff Oselmo sped off with a prime prize and the winner’s trophy of the feature 25-lap event of the 15th annual Troy Humphrey Memorial Cycling meet yesterday at the National Park. Oselmo, who hails from the mining town of Linden, led Eric Sankar and Paul Choo-Wee-Nam into the top three places in that order.

Top veteran rider Raymond Newton, national road race champion, Orville Hinds and Warren ‘40’ McKay placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Hinds also rode away with three sprint prizes while Sankar and Choo Wee Nam copped two each. Bronze medalist at this year’s Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships, Raynauth Jeffrey dominated the Junior/Juvenile 20-lap showdown with Michael Anthony and Raul Leal who finished second and third respectively. So dominant was Jeffrey’s performance that he won all five prime prizes.

The Team Time Trial, which saw four riders representing a club, was won by host club Roraima Bikers Club, followed by Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club (LBFCC) and Team Coco’s.

Keon Thomas won the six-lap Upright/Mountain Bikes clash with Nigel Jacobs settling for second followed by Julio Melville in third place while Junior Niles was the top Veteran Under-50 rider with Ian Jackson and Kennard Lovell second and third respectively. In the Veterans Over-50 race, Vigil Jones crossed the line first while Kenneth Meije and Walter Isaacs followed in that order. Marica Dick won the female 10-lap race ahead of Toshana Dorris. In the BMX 6-11 years, one-lap race, Keon Harris took top honours ahead of Rashidi Cares and Tyron Garbarran while in the BMX 12-14 years, two-lap event, Adrian Sharma won ahead of Jamal John and Raphael Leung in second and third positions respectively.

Relatives and friends of the sponsors (the Humphrey’s family and Humphrey’s Bakery and Farm Products) of Ketley Street, Charlestown, assisted with the presentation of prizes which was primarily cash. President of the Roraima Bikers Club, Brian Allen, expressed gratitude to the sponsor and all who contributed to the success of the meet, including the club’s executive, fans and supporters who came out in their numbers to add energy to the event. Today, the RBC will partner with Digicel and the Avon Breast Cancer Awareness Group to bring into sharp focus the fight against the breast cancer and the continued search for a cure. The top rider in the senior category will pocket $100,000, while the second and third place finishers will pocket $80,000 and $60,000 respectively. Trophies will also accompany the cash prizes. Top cyclists in the Veteran, Junior and Female categories will also be rewarded. The overall champion will also be presented with the Digicel/Avon Breast Cancer jersey, which he will wear for one year. The event will pedal off at 09:00 hrs and is expected to cover approximately 70 miles.
