Essequibo couple charged with assaulting each other

A man and his wife were yesterday granted bail when they appeared before the Charity Magistrate’s Court charged with assaulting each other.

Sherylin Jardin, 35, a security guard pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on June 23, she assaulted her 38-year-old husband Steve Austin, a labourer at the Pomeroon Oil Mill.

The charge against Austin is that he assaulted Jardin on the same day. He too pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Sunil Scarce heard from the police that Jardin had also unlawfully and maliciously damaged her husband’s trunks, vest and briefs valued $4500.

According to Austin, his wife went home drunk and started to verbally abuse him in the presence of his three children. He said that she jumped on him and squeezed his testicles.

Jardin refuted these claims saying that she was in the bedroom when Austin walked in and dealt her a slap, a cuff and started choking her.

The unrepresented Austin and Jardin were both were admitted to bail – Jardin in the sum of $25,000 and Austin was granted $30,000.

They were ordered to return to court on July 14.
