Low scores dominate UDCA T20 opening

Only one team managed to bat out its allotted twenty overs when the inaugural Upper Demerara Cricket Association (UDCA) T20 hardball cricket competition commenced last weekend.

Muritaro Young Warriors chalked up 218 for 6 in twenty overs after being put in to bat by Young Achievers on Sunday at the Maria Elizabeth Ground. The Group B encounter, which began at 10.00 AM, was the first in a double header at the ground.

Denzil Peters (70), Nick Estwick (45) and Annan Chattergoon were the main scorers for Muritaro Young Warriors while Kishan Jones with 2 wickets for 29 runs from four overs was the best bowler for Young Achievers.

In reply, Young Achievers were dismissed for 112 in 17 overs to lose by 106 runs. Shurland Peters (32) and Joel Jones (18) were the main scorers for Young Achievers while Delon Jones and Nick Estwick took three wickets each for 26 and 30 runs, respectively.

In the second game, which began at 1.30 P.M., Coomacka Exodus defeated Royal Champions by 82 runs. Coomacka Exodus made 133 all out in 14 overs with 38 extras. The main score from the bat of 18 was made by Andrew Richmond. John DeGrella with 3 wickets for 18 runs off 3 overs, was the leading bower for Royal Champions.

In reply, Royal Champions limped to 51 all out in 12 with 16 extras being the top score. No batsman reached double figures. Joshua Ettiene, 4 for 11 off 3 overs; Atiba Edmunson, 3 for 10 from three overs and Kurston Thom, 2 for 9 from 3 overs were the leading bowlers for Coomacka Exodus.

The opening game of the competition featured a group A encounter between Christianburg and Dora at the Christianburg Community Centre Ground on Saturday in which the visitors defeated the host team by six wickets.

Dora won the toss and sent Christianburg in to bat. Ricardo Anderson was the main batsman for Christianburg with 25, including three sixes, as the host team plummetted from 57 for 2 in the seventh over to 93 all out in 14.3 overs. There were 30 extras. Bishal Mohammed was the pick of Dora’s bowlers with 5 for 15, including a hat trick, off four overs.

Dora replied with 94 for 4 in 12.3 overs. Lawrence Rampersaud top scored with 55. Floyd Roberts chipped in with 27. Gabriel Fiedtkou captured 3 wickets for 21 runs off three overs.
