East Coast teams invade Linden

It will be the Mining Town versus the East Coast of Demerara when the inaugural Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company GTT Knockout football championships continue today with a doubleheader at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden.

The opening affair at 18:00hrs will be a matchup of group-B sides with Ann’s Grove opposing Milerock.

Pointless in the tourney following defeats in their two previous encounters, Milerock will be hoping to secure a much-needed victory as they are currently occupying the cellar position within the group.

The likes of Ron Fiedtkou and Clarence Huggins must lead from the front come kick off time as Milerock’s hopes of punching a ticket to the next round will be extinguished if a positive result is not achieved.

On the other hand, Ann’s Grove will enter the fixture full of confidence following their 2-1 win over New Amsterdam United. Presently they sit on three points in the third position from two matches.

With a positive result likely to seal their berth into the next section, the likes of Maxton Adams and Kevon Barry will be required to continue their goal-scoring feats come kick off time.

In the feature group-A contest, section leader Winners Connection will match skills with Golden Grove from 20:00hrs.

Currently sitting atop the standings undefeated with six points from two fixtures, Winners Connection will attempt to solidify their berth in the knockout stages of the tourney and will look to the likes of Rawle Gittens, Marmarlaque Davidson, Keon Sears and Fitzroy Chin to guide them to positive result.

On the other hand, the East Coast of Demerara unit will be desperate for a positive result after accumulating only one point from their two fixtures as they sit in the third spot.

The inexperienced but talented Phillip Williams alongside Randy Stoby and the veteran Akini Cameron will have to shoulder the attacking burden and improve on their prove showings for Golden Grove if they are depart the mining town with the win.

Winner of the event will pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy while the second place side will pocket $250,000 and the respective accolade. The third place side will receive $125,000 and a trophy while the fourth positioned unit will collect $75,000 and the respective accolade.
