An imagined welcome for our women cricketers

Dear Editor,

Two members of the World Champion West Indies Women’s T20 team, Guyana’s Shemaine Campbell and Tremaine Smartt returned home to a rousing welcome at CJIA earlier today.

At hand to receive Campbell and Smartt were HE President David Granger, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, President of the GBC Drubahadur along with its Directors and thousands of flag-waving fans and supporters.

As the pair emerged from the VIP lounge, they were greeted to a resounding rendition of “Champion” sung by internationally renowned artistes Eddy Grant and Lisa Punch. Making their way through the massive throng they were hugged, garlanded and offered bouquets of flowers from the hundreds of smartly dressed school children who were bussed in for the occasion.

Flag-waving Guyanese of all stripes and persuasion, lined the East Bank highway, cheering their motorcade as it wended its way to the National Stadium at Providence.

In the backdrop of a massive stage and with pomp and ceremony, Campbell and Smartt were afforded a reception of Champions. It was a celebration of National Heroes whose exploits at the recently concluded Women’s World T20 in India brought great pride and joy to Guyana.

As a token of appreciation, President Granger on behalf of the Guyanese people, awarded both Campbell and Smartt, house lots at Pradoville that the Government had recently repossessed from members of the previous administration. The pair was also given keys to two new luxury vehicles recently seized from Baishanlin.

Yours faithfully,
Jay Mobeen
