Palmyra family beaten, robbed in home invasion

A Palmyra Village, East Canje, Berbice family was beaten and robbed on Wednesday evening, when armed bandits invaded their home.

Nadira Permaul, a vendor at the New Amsterdam market, who lives with her 69-year-old husband Tom Kissoon, told Stabroek News that they were speaking with their visiting son when the attack occurred.

Permaul recounted that they had sat on the veranda for some time and then decided to go into the living room, around 7:45pm, when the three bandits launched their attack.

According to Permaul’s son, Vijai, the three men jumped over the veranda’s rails and gained entry through a door that was left opened. He explained that the perpetrators harassed his stepfather and punched him to his left eye several times.

“Them come and tell me, if I move them gone shoot me,” Vijai said.

The traumatised 28-year-old said that one of the bandits struck him in his stomach with a gun during the attack, which lasted close to two minutes.

The perpetrators escaped with $500,000 in jewellery, $180,000 in cash, an 18k diamond ring and two cellular phones.

According to the victims, ‘B’ Division ranks responded promptly to calls made by neighbours after Permaul raised an alarm, however, no arrest had been made up to yesterday.

Tom Kissoon was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and received two stitches under his left eye.
