Silver Sands strike gold

Huradiah won the men’s division while Silver Sands retained the women’s title when the seventh annual Atkinson Brothers five-a-side football tournament concluded Monday at the Kumaka Recreational ground, Moruca, Region #1.

Huradiah upset defending champs Paloma 1-0 with Seth Robeiro proving to be the difference on the evening, smashing a free kick under the jumping wall and into the lower right corner of the net in the 10th minute to send the mammoth crowd into a frenzy.

Meanwhile, Silver Sands successfully defended their title edging Vendetta 1-0. Eventual division top scorer with 10 conversions, Annalisa Vincent e found the back of the net in the second minute.

With the win, Silver Sands walked away with $100,000 and a trophy while the runners-up pocketed $40,000 and a trophy.

Earlier, in the men’s semi-finals, Paloma defeated Construction 1-0 through a second minute conversion from Ronald DaSilva while Huradiah brushed aside Kamwatta 5-0.

Terrence Howard netted a hat-trick in the eighth, 20th and 25th minute while Lexter Fredericks and Andel Abrahams scored in the 14th and 15th minute correspondingly.

Champions were also crowned in the boys U13, U15 and Veterans tournaments. In the U13 final, Rising-Sun defeated Kumaka 2-1. Roland Henry scored twice in the fifth and eighth minute while the losers got onto the scorer’s sheet via an own goal from their opponents.

In the U15 final, Night Warriors edged Kairie 2-2 through goals from Aaron Edwards and Dexter Jose in the eighth and 16th minute. Navin Griffith scored in the 23rd minute for the losers.

In the veterans’ final, Kumaka overcame Huradiah 1-0 with Michael Atkinson netting in the 26th minute. For their effort, Kumaka walked away with $15,000 and the championship trophy.
