Improved fitness, speed keys to rugby success versus B/dos

Improved fitness and speed were mentioned as the keys to success ahead of the Rugby America’s North (RAN)15’s away game versus Barbados next week at the Garrison Savannah following a series of simulation games yesterday at the National Park.

These comments were collectively made by the players and the coaching staff following the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) conducted trials to assess the rugby talent pool and to try out different combinations before selecting the best squad for the game which is the first step in the road for the 15’s World Cup next year .

Said Coach, Shane Grant-Stewart, “We had a pretty good session today, we are a little slow in reaction and we are not 100 percent in the fitness department but we are working on those areas.”

In excess of 20 ruggers took part in the simulation games conducted by the technical team under direction of Grant-Stuart and Elwin Chase. The men’s 15’s trials consisted of numerous matches with changes made by the technical team after every game to test players in different positions and in different schemes.

Coaches, players and administrators only had praise for the event but were unanimous on improving fitness and speed in the rugby trials requested by President, Peter Green.

The games were not only an eye opener; but it indeed laid the foundation for building rugby to new heights in Guyana. According to Grant-Stewart, the national trials showcased the best local talent available at the moment and also provided the technical bench with an opportunity to have a good look at the players pre-game form and conditioning.

The national outfit is scheduled to hold more simulations games before departing on Friday for the Land of the Flying Fish.
