A man was on Friday asked to post a total of $65,000 in bail for his release after he denied stealing a bicycle and robbing and assaulting an elderly woman.

Akeem Cort faced the two charges when he appeared in a city court. He pleaded not guilty.

The first charge read to him alleges that on June 19th at William Street, Campbellville, he stole a bicycle, valued $15,000, from Jamal Cummings.

The second charge alleges that on the same date at Stanley Place, Kitty, he stole a bag, $600 in cash and an umbrella from Joan Bailey. The three items were valued $2,600 in total. It is also alleged that during the robbery, he violently pushed Bailey. Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh informed the court that on the day in question, Cort, who was on a bicycle, suspected to have been stolen, approached 64-year-old Bailey and took her bag. The court heard that he then pushed Bailey, who raised an alarm. Some public-spirited persons later helped with capturing him.

Cort was granted $15,000 on the larceny charge and $50,000 bail on the robbery with violence charge. If he posts bail, he would also have to report to the Kitty Police Station on Mondays at 9 am. The matter was adjourned until July 26th.
