President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), Kalam Azad Juman-Yassin has indicated that the president of the Guyana Cycling Federation, Horace Burrowes has promised to conduct the body’s elections in August.

Last month, Juman-Yassin had promised to write Burrowes over the issue since the four-year constitutional term of the current executives had ended  in March without elections being held.

Juman-Yassin told Stabroek Sport, “I have written the President and he promised to hold the elections in August but he did not set a date however it will be after the championships.”

Guyana is expected to host the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championships August 10-11.

The GOA boss added that the correspondence from Burrowes had included an excuse as to why the body had diverted from the constitutional time frame but Yassin called the excuse “flimsy.”

When asked if a committee should be installed to run the championships rather than the now illegal body, Juman-Yassin was lenient and noted that in good faith, “let the body handle it, the Championships is just now and it is something good for Guyana we don’t want to be distracted from the Championships.”

When it was revealed that the Championships would be hosted in Guyana back in May, Burrowes is on record saying “The elections of the GCF is coming up, but I don’t think that is relevant at this time and I think we will speak on this a different time…the discussion could happen over the phone, when I return…I wouldn’t be hard to find.”

The GCF President went on to say, “I will say again the Guyana Cycling Federation is in very good standing with the UCI and the UCI is the world body and they control the federation or every international federation and I do as UCI say and I go as our constitution says and if UCI says to do certain things then I am doing as UCI say so I am actually going to say I don’t think it is relevant for us to speak on that anymore in terms of the elections.”

With a number of associations failing to hold their elections within the stipulated time, Juman-Yassin had told this publication that the GOA will be pushing to amend its constitution to reprimand rogue bodies.
