Agricola man gets six months jail for threatening to kill father

A man was sentenced to jail yesterday after he pleaded guilty to threatening his father over money.

Pooran Downarine appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was sentenced to six months in prison by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty, after admitting that on July 5, at 66 Benn Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, he threatened his father, Pooran Downarine senior, after the man would not give him money to buy cigarettes.

In addition to the threat, it was alleged that he broke six window panes of the house belonging to Downarine senior.  He pleaded guilty with explanation to both charges but when asked for the explanation, he said he had none. He later said, “I want to work but he ain’t want me to work”. His father objected and said it is the son who does not want to work and keeps harassing him for money.

Police prosecutor Annalisa Brummell told the court that on the day in question, Downarine senior was at his home when his son started to demand he give him $1,000.

The father refused to give him the money and so he got annoyed. Downarine junior then threatened to kill his father, and later threw some stones through the window of his father’s house. Fearful for his life, Downarine senior went to the Agricola Police Station and made a report. Downarine junior was then arrested and charged for said offences.

The prosecutor also asked the court to show the defendant that this is a serious matter because he was laughing when being asked for his explanation.

Magistrate McGusty fined Downarine junior $20,000, failing to pay which he will spend a default of one month in prison for the damage of property. She then sentenced him to six months in prison for using threatening language.
