Fung-A-Fat, Khalil suffer first-round defeats

Guyana’s squash duo Ashley Khalil and Mary Fung-A-Fat suffered first-round defeats on the opening day of the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru yesterday.

The duo went down 1-3 against their Chilean counterparts in the singles category.

Khalil, who is the 2019 senior national women’s champ, faced off against Paulina Giselle Castillo Delgado and went down in the first two sets 8-11, 12-14 before winning the third 11-7. Her success was curtailed by the Chilean who took the fourth set and the match 11-3.

Similarly, Fung-A-Fat suffered defeat in her round of 16 match 1-3 to Maria Ana Pinta. The Chilean took the first two sets 11-7, 11-4 and dropped the third as Fung-A-Fat took it 11-7. Pinta though closed out the match with a hard-fought 12-10 win over the Guyanese in the final set.

The Guyanese will once again swing into action today with Khalil and Taylor Fernandes contesting the doubles category.
