Botofago, Eagles soar to Divine Entertainment’s football final

Botofago and Eagles will compete in the final of the inaugural Divine Entertainment Summer Super Cup Football tournament on August 3rd, following semifinal wins on Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, Linden.

Witnessed by a sizable crowd, Botofago overcame tournament giant Net-Rockers 6-5 on sudden death penalty kicks, after regulation time ended 3-3.

Prior to the dramatic conclusion, Net-Rockers raced off into the early lead, as they tallied two goals in the space of eight minutes.

Deshawn Joseph broke the deadlock as he found the back of the net in the fifth minute, before Shane Luckie opened his account with a 13th minute strike.

Botofago eventually pulled one back in the 24th minute to reduce the deficit through rising star Dequan Hercules. The scoreline would remain unchanged heading into the halftime interval.

Botofago then restored parity to proceedings following the resumption of play, as Trevon Archibald made his presence felt in the 69th minute.

However, Net-Rockers fought back as they retook the lead in the 85th minute via a Luckie conversion. The aforesaid conversion seemed to have sealed the contest and final’s berth for the Net-Rockers outfit.

However, Jamal Haynes would ensure the match enter a penalty shoot-out, securing the unexpected equalizer in the 88th minute.

Meanwhile, Eagles brushed aside Capital FC 3-0. Colwyn Drakes was the hero of the night as he tallied a deserved hat-trick.

Drakes recorded the only conversion of the first period compliments of a 28th minute strike.

Upon the resumption, Drakes would record his second goal of the night, slamming home his effort in the 72nd minute.

The contest would then be put to bed, with Drakes sealing his hat-trick eight minutes onward.

The two losing semi-finalists will now face-off in the third place playoff.

The event was contested in an initial group stage format. Group A comprised Eagles, Topp XX and Coomacka while Group B consisted of Net-Rockers, Amelia’s Ward and Blueberry Hill. Group C contained Haynes Hitters, Capital FC and Hi-Stars and Group D featured Milerock, Botofago and Silver Shattas.
