Guyana scampered to a one-run win over Trinidad and Tobago in the final round of the Cricket West Indies Regional Under-19 tournament at Arnos Vale yesterday but were unable to lift the title for a sixth time in succession.

Guyana finished third with 14.6 points while Barbados lifted the championship in an undefeated run that earned them 21.5 points. Windward Islands, who were also unbeaten, were second with 16.8 points.

They were unlucky to have three no result matches.

Trinidad ended with nine points to take the fourth spot while winless Jamaica and the Leeward Islands finished were fifth and sixth respectively.

In yesterday’s final round encounter, Trinidad won the toss and invited Guyana to bat first in the   reduced 48-overs-a-side contest due to rain. Guyana posted 149-5 from their allotted overs and then dismissed Trinidad for 148 in 47.4 overs.

Guyana lost Sachin Singh for a seven-ball duck but Junior Sinclair, who was promoted to the opening spot, and partner Kevlon Anderson  shared a 74-run stand.

Sinclair and Anderson batted cautiously, scoring 30 and 42 runs respectively at a strike rate of less than 45 before off-spinner, Avinash Mahabirsingh removed them both.

The foundation was set for Seon Glasgow (24) and Alphius Bookie (25 not out) to come in and play freely.

In the chase, Mbeki Joseph, batting in the middle produced a defining innings of 41 while Leonardo Francis (24) and Aaron Nanan (23) were the main pillars.

However, left-arm spinners, Ashmead Nedd and Kelvin Umroa took two wickets each while Anderson returned with the ball and held his nerve in removing Joseph and Sameer Ali in the final over to help his team win.
