Stabbed Parfaite Harmonie teen released from hospital

Omesh Lakeram, the teenager who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPC) after being stabbed in the chest by a bandit, has been discharged and is currently at home recovering.

Lakeram, 18, a construction worker, was following two of his neighbours home on August 15th when they were attacked by a lone bandit on a bicycle at La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara. Lakeram tried to fend off the bandit and was stabbed in his chest.

He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where was admitted to the ICU until Sunday.

According to Sorojinie Sewdial, her two daughters – ages 17 and 19 – were returning home from work in Georgetown around 7 pm in the company of Lakeram when they were attacked.

Lakeram, who lives next door to the girls, would often follow them home given the fact that they would usually have to walk some distance along a lonely street to get to their house.

Lakeram suffered a punctured lung and a slight graze to the heart but is making significant progress towards a full recovery.

The police have not yet been able to arrest a suspect in the attack.
