Eagles edge Den Amstel by the odd goal in seven

Eagles FC overcame Den Amstel by a 4-3 score yesterday when the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) leg of the NAMILCO U17 championships resumed at the National Track and Field Center, Leonora.

A pair of penalty kicks highlighted the opening half of the 70 minute contest, with Romel Medas handing Eagles the lead in the 20th minute from the spot after Tolbert Baptiste was fouled inside the area.

Their lead did not last long as Jamal Robinson equalized from the penalty mark in the 25th, blasting his effort clinically past the opposing custodian.

Junior Redmond then pushed Den Amstel ahead in the 31st minute, racing onto a through pass before slotting calmly past the goalkeeper.

The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime break.

It was a game of two halves as Eagles outscored Den Amstel 3-1 to secure the come-from-behind result.

Raynard Nedd started the comeback with the equalizer in the 39th minute, uncorking a powerful left foot shot into the  back of the net, after racing down the left side.

A penalty conversion by Medas to seal his brace in the 42nd minute handed Eagles the timely lead, following another rash infraction inside the 18-yard box.

Eagles then extended their advantage in the 58th minute as Nedd secured his second, slotting home unchallenged inside the box after latching onto a left side cross.

Den Amstel eventually pulled one back two minutes later through Chris Smith, who stormed his way into the area and thumped a powerful effort into the far corner.

Eagles would hold firm in the remaining minutes to secure the deserved win. The event resumes tomorrow (Sunday) at the same venue with a triple-header.

Den Amstel will tackle Hurry ATE from 10:00hrs, while Pouderoyen will engage Uitvlugt at 12:00hrs and Wales will take aim at Eagles from 14:00hrs.
