Explosive wicket-keeper batsman Nicholas Pooran has thrown his support behind the ‘youthful’ Guyana Amazon Warriors to lift the 2019 HERO Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The 23-year-old, arrived in Guyana on Sunday evening to join the squad as they prepare for their first three matches at home on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at the Providence Stadium. He has only one thing in mind, winning the title.

Speaking to the media at the official launch of the team at the Marriott Hotel, Kingston yesterday, Pooran said, “It’s different from the rest of the teams. We are a young bunch of guys, a lot of new talent and fans are really excited, I know they give us some headache sometimes but we are young and we are going to make mistakes as well but we are going to have really good gives.”

The left-handed batsman explained that he doesn’t think it is easy to single out one of the strengths of the Warriors but posited that the composition of the side reflects a balance with their solid batting and capable bowling unit, especially in home conditions.

Pooran, a batsman with a strike rate of 143 in the format, has turned out for Barbados Tridents, St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots as well as Trinbago Knight Riders (formally Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel) but this season said that he is happy to be part of the Warriors set up.

“I’m really looking forward to the 2019 season with Guyana, Guyana is one of the most successful franchises. They haven’t won a title yet but they are successful because they reached four finals and I’m excited and will try to contribute my best in whatever way I can do to make the Guyana franchise successful this year.”

While shifting from team-to-team in the past, Pooran does not believe he has a point to prove but rather a desire to go out and be victorious.

“It’s just another day of cricket. The CPL is the most loved tournament around the world. Yes, it is competitive, I want to go home and do really well but at the end of the day I just want to be victorious, once you can get that victory that is most important, win lose or draw we are still friends,” he said.
