Guyana’s batting sensation Shimron Hetmyer expressed a sigh of relief after registering a nifty match-winning half-century to guide the Guyana Amazon Warriors to a crushing eight-wicket win over St Kitts and Nevis Patriots Saturday night at the Providence National Stadium.

Heading into this year’s CPL Hetmyer was out of form having failed to register a substantive score for the West Indies against a touring India side.

However, notwithstanding his recent shortcomings, Hetmyer stroked a shrewd unbeaten innings of 70 which ensured Warriors hunted down  the  153 set by Patriots inside 19 overs.

“Finally,” he said when asked whether he was relieved to get a score in front of a packed house at Providence.

“I just tried as much as possible to do my best and tried to correct my wrongs and kept working hard on my batting…

“It’s always great playing in front of this Guyana crowd and I’m happy to pull off a win for them,” he added during the post-match press briefing.

Recalling his approach to what many regarded as a ‘complete innings’, the 22-year-old explained that his main intention was merely to play the situation of the game.

“I just applied myself and just put away the bad balls basically… rotating the strike as well…

“I think we just tried to hit the ball around as much as possible and we capitalised on our power play which came off well for us,” he noted as being the key ingredients to his knock and the team’s success.

Hetmyer added that his intention was also to “keep it simple and to play ‘his game’,” will lead Warriors’ charge as they go on the road after the completion of yesterday’s match-up against the Barbados Tridents.

Warriors’ next three encounters will be against the St Kitts/Nevis Patriots, the Jamaica Tallawahs and the Barbados Tridents in their away fixture.
