Accused Brickdam lock-up escapee cleared after cops fail to prove charge

Charged almost three months ago with escaping police custody, Seon Maynard was cleared yesterday after a city court found that the prosecution failed to make a case against him.

Maynard was on trial before Magistrate Rondell Weaver.

The charge against him alleges that on June 2nd, 2019, at the Brickdam Police Station, he escaped while in lawful custody for larceny. At the conclusion of his trial yesterday, the magistrate noted that Maynard claimed that a police rank collected $20,000 from him and he was released from the lock-up.

It was further noted that the accused, in his caution statement, stated that he did not escape.

The court then heard that the prosecution failed to prove its case against him and as a result the matter against him was dismissed.
