Rain hurts TKR bid for top spot

GROS ISLET, St Lucia, CMC – Heavy rain stalled Trinbago Knight Riders’ bid to catch leaders Guyana Amazon Warriors, when it forced the abandonment of their encounter against struggling St Lucia Zouks here Saturday night.

Choosing to bowl first, TKR had reduced Zouks to 99 for four in the 13th over before the bad weather arrived an hour into the contest at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground, to end play prematurely.

South African Colin Ingram provided the only real bright spark with an unbeaten 52 off 34 balls but the hosts lost wickets steadily, and were lagging on 85 for three at the half-way stage of the innings.

Each team earned a point for their efforts, leaving TKR on nine points and one behind Amazon Warriors, and Zouks one from bottom of the six-team standings on three points.

Not for the first time, Zouks started poorly when they lost both openers Andre Fletcher (9) and John Campbell (6) cheaply to slip to 34 for two in the fifth over.

Fletcher was well taken in the deep by Khary Pierre off pacer Ali Khan while Campbell’s full-blooded drive was brilliantly taken one-handed on the follow through by fast bowler Jimmy Neesham.

Ingram came to his side’s rescue, lashing five fours and two sixes as he put on a crucial 51 for the third wicket with New Zealander Colin de Grandhomme (17).

Captain Kieron Pollard claimed the breakthrough at the end of the 10th when he got de Grandhomme to mis-time a drive to Neesham at cover and Rahkeem Cornwall (8) lashed a massive six before slicing a heave at left-arm spinner Pierre to be caught by Ali Khan running around to short third man in the 13th over.

There was little time for a new batsman to arrive at the crease before the heavens opened.
