A man died early yesterday morning after the car he was travelling in turned turtle along the De Kinderen Public Road, West Coast Demerara, during a street race.

Dead is Leroy Cummings, 25, of Lot 125 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo. Two other persons who were travelling with Cummings suffered injuries. They were treated at the Leonora Cottage Hospital and discharged, while Cummings was transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital for additional medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival.

In a statement yesterday, police said investigations revealed motorcars PVV 4886 and PMM 4818 were racing on the public road prior to the accident, which occurred around 12.30 am.

Police said motorcar PVV 4886, the one in which Cummings was a passenger, was negotiating a turn when it turned turtle and crashed into a fence.

Following the collision, public-spirited citizens rushed to the rescue of the occupants of the vehicles. They were all taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital. Breathalyser tests that were administered to the drivers found that they were above the prescribed alcohol limit. They have both been detained by the police.
