-Amelia’s Ward Panthers also advances
Amelia’s Ward Panthers and Coomacka sealed their respective berths to the elimination round when the Upper Demerara Football Association [UDFA] Year-end Championship continued on Wednesday at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC), Linden.
Amelia’s Ward mauled Botofago 3-1. It was a gritty showing from the Panthers who took the lead in the 24th minute through a Dellon Luke strike, which proved to be the only conversion of the first half.
Panthers would eventually double their lead as Romero Allicock placed his effort into the back of the net in the 61st minute. The lead ballooned once more in the 78th minute as Gevon Hinds rifled home a powerful effort, effectively sealing the contest.
Botofago would record a consolation goal in the form of Marley Haynes in the dying minutes of the period. Meanwhile, Coomacka edged Silver Shattas in a seven-goal thriller 4-3. The contest started positively for Coomacka, as they took command of the clash with two goals in the space of eight minutes.
Lionel Peters got their sizable fandom on their feet with a 26th- minute shot into the far corner. This was quickly followed by a Wheatland Thom attempt in the 34th minute.
However Felix Inniss lashed his effort into the back of the net in the 35th minute to reduce the deficit for Silver Shattas. The 2-1 scoreline remain unchanged heading into the halftime interval. The second half mirrored the first, as Coomacka fashioned two goals in the space of seven minutes to strengthen their grip on the contest.
Keron Charles made it 3-1, as he found the back of the net in the 52nd minute. His conversion was followed by a Gary Savoury effort in the 57th minute. Silver Shattas initiated a late comeback attempt as Jermaine Samuels netted 10 minutes onward.
Andel Norville then made it 3-1 as he found the back of the net in the 90th minute with a right-foot conversion. Nonetheless, Coomacka defended their marginal lead in the final moments to secure the deserved win.
The tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue with another doubleheader. In the opening match, Hi-Stars battle Capital FC from 19:00hrs while the feature match will pit Topp XX against Aroaima at 21:00hrs.
The event features 10 teams divided into three groups. Group-A consists of Coomacka, Net Rockers and Silver Shattas, while group-B consists of Hi-Stars, Winners Connection and Capital FC.
Group-C is made up of Topp XX, Amelia’s Ward, Aroaima and Botofago. The other playing dates are December 23rd, 26th, with the semifinals pegged for the 29th. The grand final will occur on January 1st.
