Painter dies after Montrose crash

A 60-year-old painter died on Wednesday morning after suffering grisly injuries as a result of losing control of his motorcycle along the Montrose Public Road, on the East Coast of Demerara.

The deceased was identified as Donald Mootoo, of Bissoon Street, South Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.

The accident occurred around 1.50 am.

The police said that initial enquiries revealed that Mootoo, who was riding motorcycle CH 7540, was proceeding west along the northern lane of the southern carriageway of the main road. The man reportedly lost control of the motorcycle as he was negotiating a right turn.

As a result he collided with the median of the public road and his body was flung onto a light pole in the centre of the road and he sustained numerous injuries about his body, including severed limbs.

Mootoo was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited persons and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Other reports indicate that the man was traveling at a fast rate of speed and his body was flung several feet away from the point of impact.

The police noted that a further update on their investigation into the accident will be given at a later time.
