Williams wins Burnham Memorial two-stage road race

Team Evolution defied the odds to finish first and second in yesterday’s Linden Forbes Burnham Memorial Two-Stage road race.

The club’s most senior wheelsman, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams placed first in the annual Forbes Burnham Foundation sponsored event while new recruit, Curtis Dey placed second overall. Marcus Keiler completed the podium in the race which started in Linden and ended on CARIFESTA Avenue.

Williams won the first leg from Linden to Georgetown in 2:59:41 and placed fifth in the second leg from CARIFESTA Avenue to Belfield and back. That leg was won by his club mate, Christopher Griffith in 1:14:30.

Williams’ overall time 4:14:28 was two seconds faster than Dey’s time. Keiler who won the Courts Mashramani 50-mile road race a day earlier in Berbice, completed the almost 100-mile two-stage event six seconds off the winning time.

Mario Washington, David Hicks and Joslyn Thom were the top three junior riders, while Paul Choo-Wee-Nam, Alexis Mendes and Jaikarran Sookhai finished 1,2,3 in the veteran category.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the sponsors,Vincent Alexander congratulated the riders for their outstanding efforts as well as the organizers from Flying Stars for a job well done.

Alexander also encouraged the riders to continue to strive for excellence, reminding the younger generation that the late President, Forbes Burnham was very much in tune with sports and would have been proud to see the healthy competition in the discipline.

Note: Burnham was born on February 20, 1923 and passed away on August 6, 1985.
