Lady Jags through to CONCACAG quarterfinals

The Lady Jaguars secured their place in the quarterfinal round of the CONCACAF Women’s U20 Championship, defeating Cayman Islands 2-0 yesterday at the Felix Sanchez Stadium, Dominican Republic.

Shanice Alfred recorded the opening goal in the 24th minute, which proved to be the only conversion of the first half, lashing home into the back of the net. 

The contest was then effectively sealed in the 55th minute when Aubrey Narine found the back of the net, placing her effort past the opposing custodian.

Guyana’s starting XI which included no locally based player, consisted of Anessa O’Brien, Jenea Knight, Anaya Johnson, Brianne Desa, Jade Vuyfhuis, Serena McDonald, Samantha Banfield, Nailah Rowe, Alfred and Narine.

Local players Tiandi Smith, Horicia Adams and Shamya Daniels made their appearances in the 76th, 82nd and 89th minute respectively.

According to statistics from Data Factory, Guyana recorded 14 attempts with 10 being on target. On the other hand, Cayman Islands tallied a total of two shots, with one striking the woodwork.

In terms of the possession, Guyana monopolized 59% of the ball. This translated to 241 completed passes from 311 attempted at a conversion rate of 77%.

For Cayman Islands, 145 passes were completed from 188 attempted at a completion rate of 77%. In terms of steals recorded, Guyana outhustled their opponents 7-5 while they accumulated four corners to their opponent’s three.

Guyana will now match skills with Haiti in the final eight section tomorrow at the same venue. The other teams to seal their places in the quarterfinal section are five-time champions USA, two-time winners Canada, defending champions Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.
