Berbice doctor gets $400,000 bail release on causing death charge

A Berbice doctor involved in an accident which resulted in the death of teenager Alyia Mohabir was yesterday placed on $400,000 bail after he was finally charged.

Dr Giresh Sadeo, 31, of Lot 196 Section B Number 78 Village, Corentyne, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

Sadeo, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was placed on $400,000 bail and ordered to lodge his passport.

He will return to court on June 4 for a report.

Mohabir, 16, and her sister, Aneela Mohabir, 14, both of Number 46 Village, Corentyne, and Roshone Mohan, 9, of Bush Lot village, were injured in the accident on February 14.

In a statement, police had said that the accident occurred around 12.15 pm along the Bush Lot Public Road, where the car was proceeding east along the northern carriageway at a normal rate of speed.

According to the police, the driver alleged that he saw a school child who was standing on the southern side of the road suddenly run into the path of his vehicle, after which he applied brakes and swerved left to avoid a collision.

However, he was unsuccessful and ended up on the northern footpath and collided with the other children, who were walking on the footpath.

The three were rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, after which Alyia was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital and then to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she finally succumbed.
