Giftland closes supermarket, pharmacy until further notice

As the nation awaits an official declaration from the March 2 polls, the management of the Giftland Mall has closed the FoodMaxx Superstore and Shoppers Pharmacy until further notice.

Devindra Deonarine, the Director of Operations of the Giftland Mall, on Monday told Stabroek News that as a precautionary measure they decided to close the supermarket and the pharmacy, which had remained in operation during the COVID-19 restrictions as they were deemed essential services.

Via its Facebook Page, the Giftland Mall on Friday informed customers of the indefinite closure.

Deonarine said that the mall had seen a further decline in business since the start of the national recount for the March 2 polls, which was conducted at the nearby Arthur Chung Conference Centre.

He explained that given the uncertainty surrounding the vote recount and the decline in business, they made a decision to halt operations.

“At the moment we are monitoring the situation and will make a decision once there are no disruptions. But as a precaution, we have covered our glass windows and doors and re-inforced our security measures,” Deonarine said.

Some previous elections have been marred by post-electoral unrest, including the destruction of a number of businesses.
