Fire damages unoccupied army facility at Maria’s Lodge

The police are investigating an early morning fire which damaged the unoccupied Army Base of the Second Infantry Battalion at Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast.

Stabroek News was informed that the fire started between 3 am and 3.30 am this morning. Quick action by alert residents prevented the fire from spreading.

The floor of the building was  partially burnt along the southern and northern walls.

Reports are that neighbours observed fire coming from the top flat of the building.

An alarm was raised and public-spirited citizens managed to contain the blaze by forming a bucket of brigade.

The Guyana Fire Service was summoned.

The building had no electricity connection.
