Grass cutter dies in Melanie accident

A 53-year-old grass cutter died on Tuesday afternoon after he was reportedly hit by a motor car along the Melanie Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

Dead is Wayne James of Cinema Road, Melanie, ECD. He sustained injuries to his head and about his body. 

The accident occurred around 18.50 hrs.

The driver, a 22-year-old resident of Haslington, ECD was taken into police custody. He passed a breathalyzer test.

Enquiries revealed that James was proceeding east along the southern side of the public road, when the driver alleged that he suddenly swerved across the road and into the path of motor car, PMM 8751.

At the time, the motor car was proceeding east along the northern side of the said road.

As a result, the driver told the police that he applied brakes and the right side of the vehicle collided with James.

James fell onto the roadway. He was picked up in an unconscious condition by the driver and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
