Stabbed men recovering after Bel Air home invasion

The two Bel Air men who were stabbed in a home invasion on Wednesday are reported to be showing signs of recovery at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Mooteevereen Chinatombi, 56, who is an Economics lecturer at the University of Guyana and his son, Nicholas Chinatombi, a doctor attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital, were both stabbed during the attack.

Mooteevereen was stabbed in his stomach, while Nicholas sustained two stab wounds to the left side of his abdomen and one to his stomach.

They both underwent surgery.

Sophia La Rose, Mooteevereen’s wife, told this newspaper that both men were showing signs of improvement yesterday.

She, however, noted that she remained traumatised by the attack.

The woman said she has not slept since the invasion.

La Rose said, it is unclear why they were targeted since they are not business owners but simple public servants awaiting the next pay day.

She was also troubled by the fact that young people are being steered in the wrong direction, as she described the attacker as “young.”

Commander of Region 4(a) Simon McBean, when contacted, stated that the suspect is still to be arrested, and investigations are ongoing.

One of the lecturer’s sons, Andrew, told Stabroek News on Wednesday that he went to bed about 12.45 am but was awakened when he heard his father groan in pain. He noted that he ran out into the hallway and saw the suspect with a knife in his father’s stomach.

He added that while he saw the robber, the man did not see him. As a result, he went for his older brother, Nicholas. The doctor, still drowsy from sleep, immediately confronted the intruder, knocking him away from his father.

During the scuffle Nicholas was stabbed three times.

La Rose told the robber to take whatever he wanted. The suspect then took cash that was left on a counter earlier in the day.

According to Andrew, it was then the robber looked up and realized how many persons he was surrounded by and asked Andrew to open the front door for him to leave.

A nearby resident who had heard screams coming from La Rose called the police. Andrew said that the police arrived three minutes after the man escaped. Paramedics arrived seven to ten minutes later.

Both men were taken to the hospital, and were taken into surgery. Nicholas is said to have suffered bruises to his kidney as well as abdominal bleeding.

The intruder was said to have broken in to and climbed through a high window in the kitchen. Owing to its height, that window was not grilled like the rest of the windows around the house.

La Rose said that their home was broken into in 2014 and the suspect was never caught.
