No bail for NY-bound woman found with cocaine in luggage

Tommyann Bunbury, the woman who was arrested on Monday after cocaine was found hidden in her luggage at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri was yesterday refused bail after being charged with possession of narcotics for drug trafficking.

Bunbury, 42, who is a mother of seven with addresses in both Guyana and Suriname, appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge.

She pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison until December 23rd, 2020.

The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) on Monday arrested Bunbury, a New York-bound passenger, after cocaine was found concealed in cavities in a book, make-up and other personal items in her luggage.

CANU noted that Bunbury is a food vendor at a café in Paramaribo, Suriname, where she has been living for the past six years but periodically returns to Guyana to fulfil immigration obligations. She also has a Plaisance, East Coast Demerara address.

She had been booked to travel on an Eastern Airlines flight to New York from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
