Rank charged over ganja found at prison officers’ quarters

A Prison Officer was recently charged over the discovery of cannabis at the Prison Officers’ Quarters, located at the Lusignan Prison Officers’ Sports Club.

The Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday said Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels briefed Minister Robeson Benn on the discovery.

In a press release, the Ministry said Samuels reported that a search was conducted and 894 grammes of suspected cannabis was found. At the time of the search, two Prison Officers were occupying the quarters. They were questioned about the drug but denied knowledge of it. Both ranks were arrested and taken into police custody.

On November 16th, 2020 Prison Officer Jemmott was charged with the offence “Trafficking in Cannabis,” for which he was placed on $150,000 bail.

His next court appearance is on March 22, 2021. No evidence was discovered linking the other Prison Officer to the drug find and he has since been released from custody.

The release reiterated the Ministry of Home Affairs’ zero tolerance for rogue members of the law enforcement agencies and added that it will continue to support every effort to root out those elements from the system.
