Peters Hall woman dies in accident

The family of the woman who died in an accident on the East Bank Demerara Public Road on Tuesday night, says she had left had their business place and hadn’t made contact with them for eight hours before her demise.

Dead is 33-year-old Ameena Sooklall,  of Lot 21 B Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara.

Her younger sister who spoke with this newspaper yesterday said that from what the family has been told, Sooklall was on the East Bank Highway when the accident occurred. It is unclear to the family, where Sooklall was headed. Her sister said that Sooklall went home during the morning hours and then she headed to work. This newspaper was told that Sooklall works at the family business and she had to ship some products to Port Kaituma for the business. She left to go to the shipping company at around 4 pm and that was the last they heard from her.

According to the police the accident that claimed Sooklall’s life occurred on Tuesday night at about 10.45 in the vicinity of the new Gafoor’s access road on Mc Doom Public Road, Georgetown. The police said that the motor car Sooklall was in was being driven by a 23-year-old Guyana Defence Force rank of Onderneeming, West Bank Demerara and had two other occupants: Alston Edwards, age 26 years of Shopping Plaza, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Georgetown, and Sooklall.

The police further stated that based on their investigation, the driver of the motor car was proceeding north along the eastern driving lane of the western carriageway at a moderate speed when he suddenly felt drowsy, his eyes closed and he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the concrete median. Sooklall was fatally injured.

The occupants were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where they were examined by doctors on duty. Edwards was treated and sent away while the driver was admitted and is currently in the accident and emergency unit under observation.

Sooklall’s body was taken to the Lyken Funeral home where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. The vehicle is in the custody of the police awaiting examination by a licensing and certifying officer.
