Driver still at large after Main St hit-and-run that injured businessman

The family of a city businessman who is now hospitalized after being struck down by a speeding car on December 26, 2020 is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the driver and the motorcar that were involved in the accident.

Deodat Ramsamooj, Proprietor of USA Style and Fashion located on America Street, Georgetown and of Eccles, East Bank Demerara was struck down moments are leaving Palm Court on Main Street and is now a patient in the Intensive Care Unit at a private medical facility.

A nephew of the injured man, Nathan Persaud told Stabroek News that the family was at home when they received a call informing them that Ramsamooj had been involved in an accident. He explained that from what was related to the family by a security guard at the night spot, his uncle was walking in the corner of the road heading towards his vehicle.

From the CCTV footage provided by Palm Court and seen by this newspaper, the speeding motor car struck Ramsamooj from behind. As a result of the impact, the businessman ended up on top of the bonnet of the car and then landed on the roadway. He sustained severe injuries as a result of the collision.

According to the family, the car slowed down after the accident but sped away after.

Ramsamooj was picked up in a semi-conscious state and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention. He was treated there for a few days and then moved by his family to a private facility.

The family lamented that traffic ranks investigating the accident are dragging their feet as the family is not receiving any updates on the investigation. They said too that the ranks are not proactive and appear to be relying only on the footage provided by Palm Court.

“Main Street is such a popular street with several businesses that have cameras but the police don’t seem to want to request to review the footage from those cameras. They keep saying that they can’t identify the number plate from the car,” a relative lamented.
