Shafeek Mohammed who was accused of the 2016 murder of Ramkarran Mohanlall was yesterday freed after High Court Judge Navindra Singh upheld a no-case submission made by his attorney Latchmie Rahamat.

Mohammed had been indicted for the February 3rd, 2016 murder of Mohanlall at Annandale South, East Coast Demerara.

In directing the jury to formally return a verdict of not guilty, Justice Singh said from the evidence, the now former-accused seemed to have acted in self defence.

The state’s case was presented by Prosecutor Teriq Mohammed.

Mohanlall, 33, of Annandale South, ECD died after he was involved in an argument with his wife’s brother-in-law (Mohammed).

Police had said that Mohanlall was involved in an argument with Mohammed during which he was stabbed about his body.

Latchmie Singh, wife of the dead man, had told this newspaper that her brother-in-law, who lives at the lower flat of the house where she was staying, saw her husband and started an argument with him.

During the trial a number of witnesses had testified to Mohanlall being physically abusive to his wife and Mohammed often intervening to her rescue.

When asked during her testimony, however, Singh had told the court that her husband was not abusive to her, explaining that the man only beat her occasionally.

“He beat me occasionally because of the children,” Singh had told the court.

After informing him yesterday that he would be free to go, Justice Singh told Mohammed it appeared from her testimony that his sister-in-law did not regard that he had gone to her aid or even that she was being abused and so going forward he should “look after himself.”

A visibly relieved Mohammed expressed his gratitude to the court.
