Human tissue transplant legislation could be ready by May

A bill on human tissue transplanting could be ready for parliament by May this year, according to a release on Wednesday from the Attorney General’s Chambers.

The release said that Attorney General Anil Nandlall on Wednesday met with members of the Medical Council of Guyana and Dr. Kishore Persaud, Head of Department, Multi-Organ Transplant and Vascular Access Surgery, and his team from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

They discussed the enacting of legislation that will govern human tissue transplant and related ethical issues.

The AG’s Chambers noted in its release that Guyana, currently, is bereft of legislation governing, authorizing and regulating the donation of tissue and organs to persons who are either donors or recipients.

In addition, in order to protect the citizens of Guyana from being victims of trafficking in human organs and tissue, the legislation will also propose to address the prohibition of trade in human tissue, organs and blood and as a result will create offences and penalties.

The release said that the meeting was the first of many to follow on this matter.
