Ogle squatter shot dead after allegedly attacking police

A man who allegedly attacked the police during an attempt to arrest him was yesterday shot dead on the Ogle seawall.

Sherwin Filley, also known as ‘Red ants’, 30, formerly of Plaisance, was fatally shot at a wooden shack at Ogle Seawall, East Coast Demerara, where he resided.

A police report stated that ranks acting on information went to the man’s dwelling place at about 1.50 am yesterday.

According to the report, the police decided to force open the door and attempted to apprehend Filley who they said was armed with a cutlass. It was further stated that the man attacked the police causing an officer to discharge a round which struck the man in his eye.

As a result, Filley fell to the ground. He was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body is presently lying at the GPH mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination which is ex-pected to be conducted on Monday. 

Family members of the deceased, who asked to remain anonymous, told Stabroek News that they were not aware that Filley was wanted by the police.

The family questioned if Filley was armed and attempted to attack the police officer, why not shoot him in his feet. A relative further stated that their request for the name of the policeman who shot Filley was denied on the basis that the information was confidential and that the matter was being investigated.

Further, the relatives shared that they were not aware of any recent offence committed by Filley as one relative informed this newspaper that she personally would accompany the man to court whenever he was involved in any matter.

The family said that Filley’s last court matter was dismissed.

An aunt of the deceased said she last saw her nephew about two weeks ago when he assisted her in painting a tomb.
