Man remanded over murder of vagrant

A man was yesterday remanded over the murder of Mark Benjamin, a vagrant who was bludgeoned to death with a brick while he slept.

Kareem Stewart, 27, of Lot 599 Toucan Drive, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McClennon, at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

The charge stated that on January 27, 2021, at Camp and Robb streets, Georgetown, Stewart murdered  Benjamin.

Stewart was remanded to prison until February 11, 2021.

According to information reported, a security officer who was in the vicinity revealed that on  the day in question at about 3.30 am at Camp and Robb streets, Georgetown, the suspect picked up a brick and dealt Benjamin, who was asleep on the roadway, several lashes to his head and made good his escape in a northern direction. He was later arrested at a location on Charlotte Street.
