Nadir involvement in T20 Championship sends conflicting signals

Dear Editor,

It is unacceptable that the Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir is yet to distance himself from the Speaker’s T20 Championship, a proposed nationwide T20 event involving first division teams. The tournament is set to be a collaborative effort by the illegitimate Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Everest Cricket Club and the Speaker, according to a release on the GCB Facebook page. However, it is public knowledge that the GCB has been operating as an illegal body for years, failing to hold legally constituted elections and was recently recognized by the Minister responsible for sports, Charles Ramson Jr. as what it is – an illegal board.

Therefore Nadir’s involvement or endorsement for such tournament hosted by the GCB is impermissible and undermines everything that the judicial arm of the state has done to end this prolonged impasse.  Such participation would also be viewed as a political motive by stakeholders of the sport. Recently the court has ordered the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) election to be held on February 19th which will pave a legal pathway for the GCB election, thus, any participation by any political figure at this period could become a matter of concern. The speaker needs to publicly distant himself from this event immediately.

Sincerely,

Delvon McEwan
