Drawn games for Brathwaite’s Gloucestershire, Joseph’s Worcestershire

LONDON, CMC – West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite failed for Gloucestershire while Alzarri Joseph and Worcestershire went wicket-less, as both games ended in disappointing stalemates on Sunday’s final day of the third round of the County Championship.

Needing to bat out the entire day at Southampton to avoid defeat to Hampshire after being asked to follow on by 150 runs on Saturday’s third day, the visitors ended on 197 for nine after resuming from their overnight 14 without loss.

Brathwaite, unbeaten on 10 at the start, made 21 before becoming the day’s second casualty at 33 for two, holing out to mid-on off left-arm spinner Liam Dawson after striking three fours in a 61-ball knock that lasted just over 1-¼ hours.

With Gloucestershire tottering on 50 for three, Hampshire seemed firm favourites for the win but Tom Lace (38) and Ian Cockbain (36) sucked precious time out of the game with a stubborn 53-run fourth wicket stand.

Lace struck half-dozen fours in nearly 2-¼ hours at the crease while Cockbain, who added a further 30 for the fifth with Ryan Higgins (28), hit four fours in almost 2-¾ hours.

Higgins’s dismissal triggered a slide that saw four wickets tumble for seven runs to leave Gloucestershire on 161 for nine but Josh Shaw (23 not out) and Dominic Goodman (9 not out) remained resolute in a 36-run last wicket stand which frustrated Hampshire.

At New Road, fast bowler Joseph sent down 11 overs for 18 runs without much luck as Nottinghamshire batted the entire day to finish on 236 without loss, openers Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater both ending unbeaten on 114.

Notts were 87 without loss at the start after being asked to follow on by 160 runs.

And at Canterbury, Windies fast bowler Miguel Cummins failed to score as Kent crashed to an innings and five-run defeat to Lancashire.

Resuming on 209 for one requiring a further 147 to make Lancs bat again, Kent were undermined by 24-year-old leg-spinner Matt Parkinson who claimed seven for 126 including the wicket of Cummins which ended the game.
