The inaugural Marcel Crawford Memorial cycle road race will pedal off tomorrow in Berbice.

The 45-mile race, which is open to all cyclists from the ancient county, has been organised by cycling coach, Randolph Roberts and the Flying Ace Cycling Club.

It is being sponsored by Franco Crawford and Colin Elcock Crawford, nephews of the late Marcel Crawford.

According to Roberts, the race will begin in front of the Sukhpaul’s Gas Station, New Amsterdam, proceed to the Number 51 Police Station before heading back to Alness where the chequered flag will be in front of Crawford’s former residence.

The race will ride off at 08.30 hours and will have three sprint primes along with prizes for the top five finishers, top three juniors and top veteran rider.

Roberts thanked the nephews for their initiative in sponsoring a cycling race in honour of their uncle who is remembered as an avid sport enthusiast.

He said that the sponsorship comes at a crucial time since the race will serve as preparation for the upcoming Guyana Cycling Federation four-stage championship. He reminded that the race will be kept under strict COVID-19 protocols.

Roberts says that he anticipates a tense battle among the cyclists, highlighting the fact that despite the pandemic, many of the cyclists have been keeping in shape.

Among the riders expected to compete are top seed, Romello Crawford, the Hicks brothers Andrew and David, Balram Narine, Andre `Padlock’ Green, Jeremiah Joseph, Ralph Seenarine, Mario Washington, Ajay Gopilall, Jason Sampson and others.

Crawford, a former senior counsel, was a pioneer in local horse racing and a former national cycling champion. He passed away on Christmas Day 2013.
