Crawford lifts Mohabir Baljeet Sukhpaul Memorial title

National cyclist, Romello Crawford, won a three-way dash to the finish line to lift the Mohabir Baljeet Sukhpaul Memorial 46-mile road race Sunday.

The race, which was organized by the Flying Ace Cycling Club, began in front of the New Amsterdam-based Sukhpaul Gas Station with the riders in pursuit of the checkered flag stationed at the other Sukhpaul’s Gas Station in Corriverton.

The 23-year-old Crawford, who has been plying his trade overseas for the last couple of years, stopped the clock at two hours and 11 minutes. The sprint saw Crawford winning by half of a wheel.

We Stand United brothers, Andrew and David Hicks settled for second and third respectively while taking three primes each.

Flying Ace’s Mario Washington and Jason Cameron rounded off the top five in the senior category in that order.   In the junior division, David Hicks and Washington finished first and second respectively with Flying Ace’s Jeremiah Joseph rounding off the podium. In the juvenile division, Richard Crandon and Raj Mootoo were the top two wheelsmen.

In the veteran category, Flying Ace’s Syborne Fernandes copped the top spot with Fitzroy Tang second. The event was open only to Berbice wheelsmen. Some 16 riders entered the race with one unable to finish after a crash at Palmyra. The presentation was done by the grandchildren of Sukhpaul.

According to organizer and coach, Randolph Roberts, the race was done in a safe environment thanks to the excellent work of the Police Commander and ranks in Berbice as well as the National COVID-19 Task Force which granted permission for the event.

Roberts thanked the Task Force and Police. He also extended special thanks to the Sukhpaul family for their support in the development of cycling.
